So. Here we go again. With a sleeve of gray, dull, overcast and at times a bit rainy or drizzly weather. The period of the year in which it far too easily happens that the sun becomes a rare event. Up here in Stockholm. Where day and night, work, sleeping and awaken time all gets mixed together, like a haze. It happens but at the same time you barely remember any specific details (unless something happened out of the ordinary).

It's a strange time. (I shouldn't complain. People in the UK are just too well aware of such weather, I am sure). Personally, I don't get used to it - because it feels strange. Like nothingness times getting stretched out "endlessly".

The only aspect I like about it - are the mild temperatures. All of the sudden, we have +7°C, due to that mild air penetrated the area of Southern Scandinavia, which brought an end to the couple weeks of too cold weather.

Rule No 1 for Stockholm's Winter:

It is always the same; The only time when mild weather dominates during winter - is when a highway of cyclones starts wandering across our lands. Lots of clouds, barely any sunshine, rain - and mild temperatures. Has nothing to do with global warming really.

We had this type of weather even 200 years ago, too. No exceptions.

While other times, when ice cold air flows down from the North, or an even as an colder airmass; from the northeast coming from Siberia... then it is deep winter with bizarre cold temperatures. If the winds come from the north or NW, we usually get sunshine, due to that the Norwegian mountains dry out the air, favoring e.g. Stockholm with plenty of sunshine.

Unless a high pressure area residing in winter, often creating overcast weather (which can be mild or it can be very cold), when the air flows from the south or southeast towards us.

In a paradox, it's still cyclones who bring sunshine sometimes - often behind cold fronts - when the layers of the atmosphere are getting mixed. High pressure areas on the other hand, tend to give us overcast weather (via Stratocumulus clouds)

GFS Outlook Stockholm

The GFS outlook isn't written in stone, since they are not that reliable (nor does any other model). But it gives a hint - a tendency of where a weather pattern is leaning towards. In this case; relatively mild weather, and overcast weather. In the finer details, the GFS prognosis will change and be less aligned to real reality. As usual. But i am confident that the tendency of milder weather, will likely take place.

That's it.

November 2025

Here the temperature curves (MIN/MAX) from Stockholm City, plus the MIN temperatures from Tullinge. Notice that there it was very cold down to -13.3°C without any influence of the city's "warm bubble". A quite remarkable difference between city and country side !

The MAX temperature differences during daytime is often very little (Tullinge is slightly cooler than Stockholm City, about 0.2-0.3°C cooler in average).

Speaking of average

It looks like that the final November monthly average for Nov 2025 turns out a tiny notch above normal average for the Stockholm Region.

South of Stockholm (Sörmland County) it has been +/- 0°C (in the first 27 days), while for the city it will likely be turn out close to +0.5°C warmer than the average of 1991-2020.

So. There is that. Despite the very mild start of November (up to 4.5°C warmer than average), the following cold period, canceled each other out across Sweden (more or less / give or take). Only in Northern Norrland / North Sweden, it ended too cold - due to the very cold temperatures around -25 to -33°C they had during a longer time (until just recently).

However, there are still 3 days remaining until Nov 2025 is over; likely increasing the monthly average by a notch or two.
